Coimbatore, also known as Kovai and Kongu Nadu, is a major city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on the banks of the Noyyal River, surrounded by the Western Ghats. The area under the corporation was divided into five zones—Coimbatore North, Coimbatore South, Mettupalayam, Sulur, and Palladam. Trichy Road is used as a boundary for three zones, i.e., Coimbatore North, South, and Central, while Saravanpudhur Road in the east bounds Tiruppur zone. The city’s population as per the 2001 census was 988,739, and the area covered under the corporation is 105.5 km.
